What Is Conduit?
A conduit is a protective pathway that encloses and routes electrical wires or cables. Conduit may be made from metal or nonmetallic material, depending on the installation. It helps shield wiring from physical damage, moisture, and environmental exposure while keeping conductors organized through walls, ceilings, floors, and outdoor areas.

Key Takeaways About Conduit
- Conduit forms a protective pathway around electrical conductors.
- The raceway type depends on the installation environment.
- Conduit is not the same as the wire inside it.
How Conduit Works

Conduit guides electrical conductors along a planned route while the enclosure protects them from contact, impact, and surrounding conditions. Electricians select a raceway material and shape that fit the building layout, exposure, and wiring method. Bends and fittings connect sections while preserving a continuous path.

Wire or cable is installed inside the completed pathway, then connected at boxes, panels, and devices. The conduit route must leave room for orderly conductor placement and future service work. Metal conduit can also form part of the grounding path when the installation method permits it.

From the GMB Electric team
When we plan conduit for new construction, we review the drawings and route before wiring begins. We check bends, fittings, support points, and entry locations so conductors can move through the pathway without damage. Our team also verifies that conduit transitions align with boxes and panels.
Conduit in Practice: A Real-World Example
For a new construction electrical installation, conduit may run from a panel through a framed wall to a device box. Conductors are pulled through the completed pathway after the route and fittings are ready.
