What Is a Junction Box?

A Junction Box is an enclosed electrical box that protects and contains wire splices, connections, and branch-circuit conductors. The enclosure keeps connection points accessible for inspection and repair while reducing exposure to accidental contact, movement, and physical damage. Junction boxes may be made from metal or nonmetallic materials and installed in walls, ceilings, or accessible areas.

Key Takeaways About Junction Box

  • It encloses wire splices and connection points.
  • Connections remain accessible for inspection and repair.
  • A junction box is not the same as a circuit breaker panel.

How Junction Box Works

An open metal electrical box holds bundled wires with orange wire nuts on a workbench surrounded by tools

A Junction Box holds electrical conductors where wires join, split, or change direction. Wire connectors secure the conductors inside the enclosure, while a cover closes the box and helps protect the connection. The box size and construction must suit the wiring method and the number of conductors inside.

During electrical wiring repair, an electrician may open the cover to inspect loose connections, heat damage, corrosion, or overcrowded wiring. A branch circuit may pass through the box while another cable supplies a light, receptacle, or appliance. A wire nut or another approved connector joins matching conductors, and the cover keeps the finished connection protected and accessible.

From the GMB Electric team

When we inspect a junction box, we check the enclosure, cover, cable entries, conductor condition, and connection security. We also trace each cable so the repair addresses the actual circuit path. Our team keeps the wiring organized and verifies that the box remains accessible after the repair.

Junction Box in Practice: A Real-World Example

A damaged cable feeding a group of receptacles may require a junction box to contain the repaired splice. The electrician secures the conductors inside the box, installs the cover, and checks the circuit for proper operation.
