What Is a Pigtail?

A pigtail is a short length of electrical wire used to connect one device or terminal to one or more circuit conductors. The connection usually joins wires with an approved connector inside an electrical box. Pigtails support secure splicing, simplify device replacement, and help keep conductors organized during wiring repair.

Key Takeaways About Pigtail

  • A pigtail is a separate wire lead, not the entire branch circuit.
  • Wire connectors join pigtails to conductors inside an electrical box.
  • A pigtail is not the same as a backstab connection.

How Pigtail Works

A man sits at a table, stripping red wire ends beside a laptop and a digital multimeter

A pigtail works by giving an electrical device its own short lead from the circuit splice. The lead connects to the device terminal, while the other circuit conductors remain joined in the box. This arrangement can keep a receptacle or switch connection separate from the continuity of the circuit.

A wire connector holds the pigtail and circuit conductors together. The connection must match the conductor type and fit the available box space. During wiring repair, an electrician may inspect the conductor ends, connector, and device terminal to identify heat damage, looseness, or an unreliable connection. The pigtail itself does not provide overcurrent protection. That function belongs to the circuit's protective equipment, such as a circuit breaker.

From the GMB Electric team

When we inspect a pigtail, we check the splice, conductor condition, connector fit, and device terminal as one connection. Our team also looks for heat marks, loose strands, or damaged insulation that could affect a wiring repair. We correct the connection based on the circuit layout and the condition of the box.

Pigtail in Practice: A Real-World Example

A loose receptacle connection may be repaired by joining the circuit conductors in the box and adding a pigtail to the receptacle terminal. The electrician checks the splice and terminal before restoring the circuit.
